Brooches – a new series

“Aegean”, brooch. Copper, sterling silver, cotton thread.

Brooches are a type of jewelry I haven’t explored as much as I would like to. I see them as an excellent way to create small scale, abstract, sculptural compositions of diverse materials.

In this new series, I plan to explore various geometrical shapes and construct frames, which will be combined with fabric and threads. Maybe I will also explore a few more materials.

My first frames will be in copper and eventually some will be made in sterling silver as well.

This first brooch, which I will call “Aegean”, is inspired by a photo I took a couple of weeks ago. In this picture you can find all shades of blue, as reflected in the sky and the sea.

I’m very excited to play with the materials I love the most -metal and fibers- and also practice making pin back mechanisms. Here, I have temporary added sterling silver wire for the pin stem but I will probably replace it with stainless steel for more strength.

Do you often make or like to wear brooches? If you’re a maker, what kind of wire do you prefer using for your pin stems?

Thanks for visiting!
