The other day I started talking about the reasons that got me into making things.
What I didn’t discuss was that through this process, you also get to know yourself a little better. And this happens when you stop and notice what it is that you make, what excites you, what makes you bored, what keeps you interested. By watching recurrent patterns, obsessions as I like to call them, you begin to think who you are and what motivates you to keep exploring.
For me, this could be a memory that dates back to my childhood, stories that need to be told again using metal, thread and textile, the environment where I grew up, nature while it’s transforming.
Trying to make sense of all that and re-interpret them through the making process is what keeps me going when things get tough. The process is painstaking, frustrating at some points, but mostly it’s fulfilling and rewarding at the end.
Like when you manage to finally finish these crocheted earrings that you had on the back of your head for a really long time!
