Martakia

“Martakia” are the bracelets that we wear on the first of March and they’re supposed to protect us from the first sun of spring. They’re traditionally made by twisting two strands of red and white thread, with red being the symbol of love and white being the symbol of purity.

This custom is so old and is believed to date back to ancient Greece and the Eleusinian mysteries. Similar customs are also found in other regions of the balkan peninsula.

I’m always fascinated by myths, ancient traditions and symbols, so this year I thought I’d make some research and then create my version of these simple, yet lovely bracelets!

I used a deep red and an ivory white thread, which work great together. The bracelets are twisted in such a way that they cannon untwist and they’re finished with a magnesite rondel.

This is the first version of the special packaging that comes with the bracelets. The final version will be ready by tomorrow!
