Ring-a-Week, #32 “A less than perfect cube”
Ever since I made the Matchbox ring last year, I’ve been wanting to repeat this form in metal.
Partly because I’ve been busy with other projects and partly because I’ve been intimidated by the soldering, I didn’t get the chance to try it until today.
I started with a few drawings and and then made some square bands in copper. It’s amazing how many variation you can make on a simple square form, I had to stop at three….the cube was waiting and I wouldn’t avoid it any more!
The soldering of the cube was of course challenging but it went more smoothly than I had anticipated. I used a mixture of red rouge and alcohol and painted previous solder seems to prevent them from opening. I went slowly and after several attempts my less than perfect cube was soldered.
After that, I filed and sanded it to make the lines a bit more crisp and then gave it a black patina.
I’m very excited that this form is open to many design variations. I’m very much tempted to add a “roof” on top and make another house, I’m also thinking earrings and pendants.
But all these will have to wait until I have it cast in sterling silver… and this isn’t going to happen earlier than September…..a very long time to wait for an impatient person like me!!!
Thanks for reading!
