Redefining Preciousness: Explorations in silver and resin

“Home Sweet Home”, sterling silver, pigmented resin.

Today, I’m very happy to present to you my latest collection of resin and silver jewelry.

Many of the designs have evolved from my last year’s work, during the Ring-a-Day project. Samples were carefully selected and new sketches and ideas were further developed.

For the pieces of this collection, sterling silver was combined with polyester resin. Polyester resin is a type of thermosetting plastic in liquid form, which becomes solid when mixed with a chemical catalyst. The colors were selected for their transparency effect, which makes the resin look like glass.

For the purposes of this series, the forms had to be kept simple, clean and geometrical. By choosing to combine silver, which is perceived as a precious metal and plastic, which is a low-cost material, I’m attempting to explore the boundaries between precious and non-precious materials, as well as concepts of social constructed value, and perceived worth.

Contemporary makers have long ago questioned whether it’s the choice of materials or the design itself that makes an object more desirable and therefore highly esteemed.

I’m planning to continue exploring these ideas and interconnections between precious and non precious materials in my future collections.
