“Sea world”, fine silver clay, freshwater pearls, coral, apatite.
I fell in love with these delicate strands of freshwater pearls that I purchased a few days ago and decided that besides the bracelets, I should make a necklace too.
To make the focal fine silver shell, I created a mold in polymer clay using a real shell. I pressed a small amount of fine silver clay in the mold and then waited for it to dry completely before I torch fire it. After the firing comes the magic part: the clay becomes solid fine silver! This is modern alchemy!
I soldered a sterling silver jump ring on the shell and then strung the pearls and the shell on beading wire. To introduce more variety and a bit of color, I added two coral beads and two apatite faceted rondelles in my favorite blue/green color.
Speaking of metal clay, today I came across this wonderful online exhibition on Crafthaus, called Powder Metallurgy (Metal Clay) in a Sheet Metal World. The metal clay work presented is exquisite and I was happy to see that my friends Lorena Angulo, Catherine Witherell and Sophia Georgiopoulou were included. You can find all the pieces here.
